SpellbookMaster 2.0 (20) — November 19th 2008

What’s new

  • New document file format. Converting old to the new format is easy. Just open the file in SpellbookMaster 2.0 and save. Note: there's no way to convert files back to the old format. The new file format is a standard property list binary XML format, so it provides better interoperability with other programs. Also, saving and loading is faster.
  • iPhone app and sharing spells from the Mac app to the iPhone app. Uses my PKFileServer library.
  • Automatic download and import of d20 System Reference spells.
  • HTML export. You can export your spells as HTML pages.
  • Spotlight plugin and Quick Look plugin. Both only work with files saved in the new file format.
  • Spotlight plugin supplies the names of the spells to the index. Spell contents are not indexed.
  • Quick Look plugin displays a preview of the file that is the same as exporting all the spells as an HTML document.
  • Tweaked spell filtering. Filter now requires both class and level to match, if supplied. So, now, Wizard 7 really means only spells that are 7th level wizard spells, not spells that are wizard spells and happen to be 7th level for any class/domain.
  • Spell editing. Finally you can edit spells right in SpellbookMaster.
  • Undo support. You can undo all actions: adding and removing spells, editing spells, creating collections.
  • Sparkle for automatic software updates. Not that I expect to have frequent updates :)
  • Spell sheet window visiblity is remembered for each document.
  • Modernized the UI.
  • Improved manual.
  • Requires Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
  • Universal binary: works great both on PPC and Intel.
  • Lots of minor bug fixes and improvements.

Known issues

  • No support for Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition.
  • Undo doesn't restore selections.

SpellbookMaster 1.5 (10) — May 8th 2005

What’s new

  • iTunes-like collection system for spells.
  • Spells can be imported just by dragging them onto a spell list or collection list.
  • Spells can be dragged from one SpellbookMaster document to another by selecting them in the spell list and dragging them to the other documents collection list.
  • Improved spell parsing. Short spell descriptions can be parsed first and added checks so that unwanted stuff doesn't get parsed as spell descriptions.
  • Spell sheet window can be opened (again) from the spell list window or from Window menu (Show Spell Sheet).
  • Some aspects of spells are editable in the spell list table view.
  • Help menu item to open the manual web page. And related: finally a manual! :)

Known issues

  • No undo/redo.
  • Resizing the window spell list can cause some parts to collapse into themselves. Workaround: close document and open it again.
  • Document edited status indication is not always set. Remember to save your document before closing if you have changes you want to save.
  • Menus have disabled items. These are items that haven't been implemented yet.
  • Spells aren't fully editable.
  • Saving performance hasn't been improved. It is all handled by Cocoa so I cannot improve it in the current design.
  • No smart spell collections.
